How to Identify Hair Density

Does hair density really matter? When it comes to understanding how to take care of your curls and how to nurture them, it is important that we understand how much hair we actually have. Learning about hair density is the key to knowing how much product to use. It is also beneficial for understanding how to brush, and even style our hair. Let’s break down hair density.

What is hair density? Hair density is the thickness of your hair. In other words, it’s how much hair you have by volume and how much you have per square inch of your scalp.

How to determine hair density? Hair density can be determined by how easily accessible your scalp is and even how visible to the eye it is.

There are three types of density: low, medium and high.

Low density- If you have low density hair, chances are you can visibly see your scalp without having to move your hair. It’s also extremely easy to part hair when you have low density hair. For this type, it is best to avoid using heavy products like thick creams and gels. It is also best to avoid over usage of products. When women over use products and use products that are too heavy for their specific density and type, they cause their curls to lose structure, and bounce as they begin to become weighed down from product. Hair products can also begin to build up on the scalp if you aren’t using the right ones.

Medium density-Women with medium dense hair have more volume, thus making the part a tad bit more difficult to see without moving the hair. Take your hands right now and place them underneath your hair and onto your scalp. Was this easy to do? Kinda easy or more difficult? This is how you can determine how dense your hair is. For medium dense curl friends, it is usually best to use a combination of heavy and lightweight products. Mixing creams and gels together or creams and mousse will ensure the product is distributed throughout all of the hair and allow the curls to retain their natural shape.

High density- High density can be described as high volume and weight per square inch of your scalp. This type of density belongs to our curl friends who can rock beautiful fros, puffs and who can achieve BIG hair. Visibility of the scalp lessens for women with high density hair. It usually takes more force to see where natural parts in the hair are. For this type, not only are heavier products recommended, but sectioning the hair while styling is also a must. By sectioning the hair, you can almost guarantee that product is distributed evenly throughout all that gorgeous big hair.

Understanding everything there is to know regarding your curls can be overwhelming. When I first started learning about my curls, I spent countless hours watching youtube videos, searching instagram for advice and scrolling pinterest for the perfect picture to show my stylist. For low density, you need very little product. For medium density, you will need a good amount of product. For high density, you will need extra product to cover the surface of your curls.

The shampoo is a super clarifying shampoo which is why it works for all density types given the right proportions. The conditioner is a mask like conditioner which is why those of you with low density hair don’t need a lot. We don’t want to overuse products that will weigh our curls down.
